Since its early days, Ommellinen has supported the hobby of sewing by offering fabrics, patterns, learning resources and inspiration! But why is sewing so popular today and why are more and more people becoming interested in it?
For many, sewing is not just a practical skill. It is a vital outlet, a channel for creativity or a relaxing pastime. It is also a meaningful way to live more sustainably. In recent years, sewing has found its way into more and more homes and for good reason. But what makes this traditional craft so relevant and important today?
Sewing can support mental wellbeing
Many people find sewing calming, even meditative. As you focus on each seam, the fabric beneath your fingers and the steady hum of the sewing machine... The rush of everyday life can fade into the background. Sewing offers a moment of escape where both hands and mind work together in harmony.
Studies show that crafting hobbies can help reduce stress, improve concentration and boost overall wellbeing. For many, sewing feels like a form of therapy or a way to unwind – and every finished garment is a wonderful moment of success!
Creativity you can wear
Sewing gives you an opportunity to express your personal style and creativity. You get to choose the fabrics, colours and prints – and the end result can be something you won’t find in a clothing store: a garment that’s entirely you!
This is especially meaningful if ready-to-wear clothes don’t fit you well or don’t feel like you. Sewing gives you the freedom to create clothing that reflects your personality – whether you’re drawn to bold and charming prints or prefer a calm and minimalist style.
At Ommellinen, our wide range of fabrics and patterns gives you everything you need to create your perfect piece. We offer over 50 different sewing patterns – and many of them are also available as ready-made garments. At our store in Kinkomaa, you can try on different styles to find the right size and fit for you.
A more sustainable way to dress
Sewing as a hobby also supports more responsible choices. When garments are made with care they are built to last and to be repaired when needed. Using recycled materials, upcycling old clothes and mending garments are all tangible actions that contribute to a more sustainable everyday life.
Community and inspiration close at hand
Thanks to social media and online sewing communities, inspiration and support are always within reach. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and sewing blogs are full of ideas, tutorials and peer support – whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced maker.
The pandemic period helped spark renewed interest in making things by hand. With more time spent at home, many rediscovered sewing or tried it for the very first time. A shared passion brings people together and offers encouragement: sewing isn’t a solitary activity but part of a broader creative movement.
Sewing combines practicality and joy
Sewing is a hobby where meaning, practicality and joy come together. It allows space for creativity, strengthens wellbeing and supports a more responsible lifestyle. It is no surprise that more and more people are taking up sewing as a hobby.
Wherever you are on your sewing journey – just getting started or already experienced – Ommellinen is here for you. With us you will find inspiration, beautiful fabrics, easy-to-use patterns and a warm community where every sewist matters!
